Just Started Crocheting - My Hands Look Like Swiss Cheese Now

Okay, so I started crocheting about a week ago. Thought it would be easy, turns out it's more like brain surgery for my thumbs and index fingers. Every time I drop the yarn, which is every five seconds, it feels like I'm playing a game of crochet dodgeball with myself. And don't even get me started on all these new calluses popping up everywhere. My hands look like they went through a cheese grater and now feel like my fingers are permanently stuck in some weird claw formation. Still laughing at how much trouble I'm having, though. Like, why do people love this so much? It's kind of driving me mad.
