My Embarrassing First Karaoke Night

So I started going to karaoke with friends last month. It's been a blast, but tonight was the first time I really jumped in headfirst. We ended up at this new club downtown that has an open mic night for singers and karaoke fans. There were some pretty good performers there, which made me nervous but excited too. I decided to go big or go home. First song choice? Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'. I figured it was the right thing to do when you're feeling all dreamy about a place and starting over. Plus, how hard could singing along to that chorus be? Well, turns out my microphone technique needs some work. The first few notes came through fine, but then... oh boy, those high parts! I must've squeaked like an adolescent mouse trying to reach the top of the mountain. And don't even get me started on how many times I forgot the words and had to look up at the screen, hoping no one was paying attention to my cluelessness. But it wasn't just about sounding bad (which, let's be honest, I did). It was also about being way too eager. There were some other people who looked like they knew what they were doing and didn't need help from me. But oh no, I had to insist on singing backup parts for them as well. At one point, a woman near us actually put her hand over her ears. By the end of the night, my karaoke group was still laughing with me instead of at me, so that's something, right? But man, am I embarrassed when I think about it. Maybe next time I'll pick a song I'm more confident singing. Or maybe just stick to cheering others on from the sidelines for a while longer.
