Selling That One Extra Cookie Bar...

So the other day at work, I was manning the checkout counter when this lady came in with a cart full of snacks and other goodies. She's one of those regulars who always asks for advice on what to buy next. Today, she had a list of items including some cookies that we don't actually have anymore. ...I've noticed before that we're down to the last couple of cookie bars left in our stock... but they aren't really advertised as available at all, since it's basically an accident that I didn't throw them away.... Anyway, this lady was insisting she needed some cookies and wouldn't take no for an answer. ...I had those last two bar cookies right there under the counter though, so I thought... why not? I mean, they aren't exactly going to go bad anytime soon... or at least that's what I told myself.... So I brought out these last cookie bars and rang them up as if everything was fine and normal. She was thrilled because it solved her problem of getting the specific type she wanted. But now I'm wondering how many other customers might have left empty-handed after coming in looking for those same cookie bars? ... I mean, maybe they would have found something else... but still, it's bothering me a little bit. Was that really fair to them or just a convenient lie? ...But at the time, it felt like the best solution. You know how sometimes you do things just to keep customers happy and avoid awkward moments? Yeah, so now I have this nagging feeling in my gut every time someone else comes looking for those exact cookies but they're not around anymore. It's kind of silly when you think about it... but there it is anyway....
