When I Broke My Mom's Treasured Teapot

So here’s this old teapot that my mom had. It was her great-grandmother’s from back in the day when they lived on a farm, and it had this really cool pattern of blue flowers with white borders around them. Whenever we visited my grandma, it would always be sitting out where you couldn’t miss it, as if Grandma herself said, “Here's our family treasure!” It was one of those things that everyone knew to be very careful with but no one ever explicitly talked about touching because it was so special and so old. I remember when I got married and moved into my own place. My husband and I wanted to decorate the house with some items from my parents, kind of a blend between his family stuff and mine. So during a visit home, I carefully packed this teapot in an old shoebox because it was small enough to fit inside our car. The day we left, as you might expect, things got hectic. My kids were running around like crazy, my husband had the suitcase half-open on the floor while he tried not to forget anything important for work, and I just wanted everyone out of there before my mom noticed I took the teapot without asking. We managed to get out okay and settled into our drive. Then it happened, this pothole bigger than my car suddenly appeared like some kind of road monster, and we bounced so hard that the shoebox flew from under the passenger seat right onto the floor between us. I didn’t think much about it at first; I thought everything was fine until we got home. That’s when I looked in the box and saw this crack running right across one side of the teapot. My heart sank because there was no way my mom wouldn’t notice. I couldn’t face telling her that day, so I put it off for as long as possible. Every time I thought about bringing it up or calling to confess, something else would come up and stop me cold. It’s been years now since we got the teapot back with its crack hidden in a cupboard where no one would see it. Looking back, of course I wish I could go back and be honest right away. My mom deserves better from her own daughter than sneaking around like this, but there are some things you just don’t do and I broke the unspoken rule about handling Grandma’s stuff with care.
