The Prank Gone Wrong

So, okay, I just started this new job at the local bookstore. I was super excited about it, but also a bit nervous because I wanted to fit in with my coworkers and impress them somehow. Yesterday was our first team meeting and we were going over procedures for organizing books by genre and author. Everything seemed pretty straightforward until lunchtime rolled around. I decided to do something kind of silly after everyone went out to grab their food, like a harmless prank to make people smile and see me as the fun new guy on board. So, I took some colorful duct tape from the supply closet and attached it to each coworker's chair with one small piece sticking up, so when they sat down, it would stick to them like a sticker. I was feeling pretty good about myself, thinking this would be a funny surprise. But then something unexpected happened, during lunch break, my direct supervisor, Alex (who’s kind of intimidating and serious), came back early from his meeting to grab some papers he forgot in the office. He sat down on one of those chairs. The duct tape caught him by surprise. It stuck to a part that... well, let's just say it wasn't very dignified for Alex, and definitely not how I wanted him to feel about me or my sense of humor. The look on his face was a mix of shock and mild anger, mostly because it made no sense why someone would do this to their own supervisor. I panicked a bit when he found out it was me who did it, and he had to quickly explain to the others what happened while I stood there feeling guilty and trying not to make eye contact. It didn't end well; everyone could see Alex wasn’t pleased at all with my antics. Now, here’s where things get confusing: why would I do something so obviously stupid? Maybe it was just that rush of excitement and wanting to be liked so much that made me lose sight of what's appropriate and respectful in a workplace. Or maybe deep down, there was still this little voice telling me this wasn't right but I didn’t listen. I’ve been replaying the moment over and over again since then, wondering if I’ll ever get back on Alex’s good side and not feel so foolish at my new job.
