I Wasn't There When She Needed Me Most

Anonymous Guilty Snitch #467 · General

So there I was, sitting at my night shift desk in the warehouse, surrounded by towering shelves of merchandise. It's quiet and lonely here when everyone else is sleeping or having dinner with their families. But today, something heavy weighed on me as I unpacked boxes. It wasn't the stacks of items waiting to be catalogued; it was a lingering sense of guilt that refused to let go. You see, my sister's been through some tough times lately. She's going through her divorce and dealing with raising two kids single-handedly. We've always been close, but she's been more distant as the stress piles up. A few weeks ago, I finally made a plan to visit her when I had my day off. To help out, maybe cook dinner, watch the kids while she slept. But you know how it goes. Day before the visit, got called into work last minute for a big order. It's been one of those days where every phone call is an emergency and everything has to get done tonight or the whole world stops spinning. I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to keep things going. So when she called that night, in the midst of all this chaos, I didn't answer. There were texts, but I couldn't even bring myself to look at my phone. Figured it could wait until everything calmed down, figured maybe tomorrow would be better. And then came today: no calls, no texts, silence. Now here I am, looking back with a heavy heart, wishing I had just stopped what I was doing and made time for her instead of letting work take over every part of my life. Because even though things are hectic and unpredictable at night shift jobs, family should never be forgotten. Sometimes we get caught up in the daily grind and forget about those who need us most.
