Why I Stole Those Socks from the Clearance Rack Last Week

So there's this guy, let's call him Sam, who works with me at the local grocery store. We're not exactly BFFs, but we talk every now and then when it's super quiet in the afternoon. Anyway, last week was pretty hectic, and I got caught up in some customer service drama where someone wanted their money back for expired bread. It wasn't really my fault, but you know how these things go, everyone assumes it must be because it came off the shelf at your station or something. Anyway, right after that, Sam starts complaining about his daughter needing new socks and how he's been trying to save up for weeks just to buy her a single pair. Now, I get that sometimes people struggle financially, but the way he was going on made it sound like having socks was some kind of unattainable luxury. So here’s where I did something I’m still not entirely sure about, I sneaked into the clearance rack and grabbed a couple of packs of socks for him. I didn’t take much; just enough to cover his kid's needs, knowing full well that taking more could get me in some serious trouble with the boss. I left them on his desk when he wasn't looking because honestly? There’s no way I was going to be brave enough to tell him what I did. I figured if he ever found out, it would just look like some kind of random handout that somehow ended up there. Anyway, today he came over and we were talking about how hectic the last few weeks have been. He mentioned his daughter's socks again and asked where she had gotten them from because they were a clearance price at Target. I almost choked on my water when he said it, I guess someone else must have donated them earlier in the week, and that’s why they showed up at his desk! Now I’m left here wondering if I was being overly dramatic about Sam's situation or if maybe people are just too afraid to help sometimes. It felt good in the moment, but now? The guilt is still there, and I don't even know who to ask for advice.
