The Neighborly Nuisance

I've been freelancing from home for about a year now. I have a small office setup in the corner of my living room, and it's been going great, quiet, comfortable, no interruptions. That was until my neighbor started working on his house project directly behind where my desk sits. He's a contractor by trade and decided to do some renovations himself this summer. At first, I thought he'd get things done within a few weeks at most. Boy, was I wrong. Three months later, it still hasn't finished, sawing, hammering, drilling; the whole toolkit. And every day without fail from about 9 AM until whenever he decides to quit for the day. I tried talking to him, politely mentioning that his noise levels were a bit too high and asked if we could figure out a schedule where my work wouldn't overlap with the loudest parts of his project. But it didn't seem to make much of an impact; he kept right on hammering away during my most productive hours. I've seriously considered working in coffee shops or libraries, but I need the quiet space for deep thinking and writing. The last straw was when he started drilling holes through the wall right next to where I sit, talk about a nerve-wracking experience! I haven't had much choice but to start listening to white noise apps at full volume during the day just to drown out the constant sounds of demolition. In truth, it's been eating away at me. It seems like such a small thing compared to other issues people deal with, but when you're trying to focus and get real work done, it can be utterly frustrating. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this up without asking for more drastic measures or just plain giving in to finding another workspace.
