The Lie That Grew Legs

I've always thought of myself as an honest person. I try my best to live by that principle in every situation. But there's this one little lie I told a few years ago that has grown into something much bigger, and it's starting to weigh on me more than I ever imagined. It all started when my friend Sarah asked for a favor. She was moving apartments, but her new place wasn't quite ready for furniture yet. She had this beautiful leather sofa she wanted to keep safe until the space was set up properly. At first, I offered to store it in my garage for a few weeks. But then something small and selfish kicked in. I'm not sure why exactly, maybe it was an impulsive desire to please Sarah at any cost, or maybe it was just that the sofa looked so perfect sitting there in her living room. Whatever it was, I ended up telling her no instead of yes, saying that my garage wasn't big enough and I didn't want to be responsible for something as valuable as a leather sofa. That little lie was supposed to go unnoticed, but now Sarah keeps asking me about furniture storage whenever the topic comes up. It's become this recurring sore point between us because she doesn't know why I suddenly became so hesitant to help with such an easy task. Every time we meet, I can see her hesitate a bit when it feels like she wants to bring it up again but decides against it out of politeness or maybe even suspicion. It's not that I regret offering the garage space originally, if Sarah knew how much I really wanted to help, I think our friendship would be much lighter than it is now. So here I am, carrying around this tiny burden from a moment of selfishness. What started as just wanting my space has become an ongoing source of guilt and tension in one of the closest friendships I have. Maybe someday soon, I'll find the courage to come clean about why I actually said no back then. Until then, it's another quiet reminder that even small dishonesties can take on big consequences.
