When Family Isn't As Simple As You Thought

There's this girl from my high school reunion that I've always felt like I should have known better. In my mind, we could have been close if things had turned out differently back then. We were young and naive but also really excited about life. Anyway, she showed up one night at a café where I work with her husband and kid in tow. The look on everyone's faces said it all, she must have told them something awful about me that day because now we just smile politely when we run into each other.
