i overgraded an essay

so i was grading essays today and one of them was really rough, full of errors and not very well thought out. but the student seemed so happy about how they did on it, like they were super proud of their work even though there wasn't much to be proud of. so without thinking too much, i gave it a higher grade than it deserved just because i didn't want to crush their spirit or make them feel bad. now i'm wondering if this is the right thing to do, whether i should go back and adjust the grades. maybe i was being too soft? what does everyone think about this?
