I Broke My Boss's Favorite Mug at Work... Oops!

So yeah, I’ve been working night shifts at the local diner for a few months now. It’s one of those places where everyone knows your name and how you like your coffee. The boss, let’s call her Jane, is actually pretty cool. She always wears this cozy sweater and comes in early to make sure everything runs smoothly before opening up to customers. We’ve had some funny moments together, mostly over spilled milk or dropped fries that somehow turn into hilarious stories by the end of our shift. But last week was different. I had a really tough night, one of those nights where you’re just counting down the minutes until you can leave and go home to sleep. A new dish came in at midnight, something experimental with these crazy names like ‘Midnight Moonbeams’ or whatever. It’s got these weirdly shaped noodles and some kind of blue cheese sauce. I didn’t even ask for details; I was just there to put it on the menu board. I stayed up late drinking too much coffee, yes, too much caffeine is a real thing when you work nights. So by 3 AM, my hands were shaking, and everything seemed extra blurry. I walked past Jane’s desk with this new menu in hand and suddenly felt my grip slipping. The mug she keeps for special occasions, the one that has all sorts of stickers on it from different customers over the years? It went crashing to the floor right as I was passing by. There were pieces everywhere, and I froze. Jane looked up, saw me standing there with the menu in my hand, and her eyes widened. For a moment, it felt like time stopped, then she just started laughing. Not mean or angry, but this hearty laugh that made me feel a bit better about everything. We cleaned up the mess together, and I tried to joke around to cover how bad I was feeling inside. ‘Gotta be careful with those blue cheese noodles,’ I said, pointing at the menu board. We both chuckled about it, and she even offered to take me out for a free coffee after my shift ended. But yeah, I feel terrible every time I see that desk now without its special mug, and worried about when she’ll find something else in place of her favorite drink holder. Maybe I should start saving up to buy her a new one? Or maybe it’s better left as is, since we still laugh about it sometimes?
