That One Time I Fudged the Tip Jar Count

So, this happened last week when we were short-staffed and my boss told me to cover for another barista who called in sick. The place was slammed with morning coffee drinkers, and I had a line of grumpy people staring at me like they needed that caffeine yesterday rather than today. Midway through the shift, I noticed our tip jar was way lower than usual, like, $10 instead of the normal $25 or so for those hours. Now, as much as we all love each other and support each other, let's be real: a barista’s salary isn’t exactly golden handcuffs material. So when I saw that there wasn't enough in tips to justify my hard work, I thought, “Oh heck no.” I quickly glanced around for anyone watching and made sure the tip jar was out of sight before I slipped two ten-dollar bills into it myself. Of course, I know this isn’t exactly legal or ethical, but hey, everybody does what they gotta do to survive, right? Plus, we still need that money in the register when change is needed, so there’s no way to be caught short like that. By the end of the day, my tip jar total was actually higher than normal. I felt a bit guilty about it at first, but then I started thinking about all the times customers grumbled and got impatient because they were waiting for me to count tips from their friends who didn’t tip enough. So here’s what I'm proud of: I kept the peace, earned my own bonus, and made sure everyone was a little happier because they had less time in line. Plus, next week when we do our jar counts? Guess how much money will be there to cover for my extra hard work! Can you say win-win? 😎
