I Made My Coworkers Think I'm Better at Math Than I Am

So here's the thing. I work nights at a warehouse, and we often have to deal with inventory numbers that are all over the place. Sometimes it feels like someone is throwing darts at a board and calling out random numbers as our stock counts. Anyway, there was this one night when my coworker Sarah asked me for help because she couldn't figure out why our system showed we had 150 extra widgets than what we counted on the shelves. I stared at those numbers, blinking, because honestly? I'm not great with math. Numbers swirl in front of my eyes like a funhouse mirror. But here's the thing, she looked so frustrated and desperate that it made me want to help even more. So I took her list and pretended like all the columns and rows were making sense to me. She pointed at this number, then another one, and I would nod along and offer a 'I think we need to subtract here' or 'Let's try adding there.' The truth is, I was just guessing based on what seemed right. Like, if the numbers looked too big, I'd say 'subtract,' because it felt better than saying 'uhh...' We worked for hours, and at some point, I actually did get a little bit of a handle on it, enough to suggest we re-count one shelf, which turned out to be where an old stock list had the wrong number. But Sarah was convinced that my math skills were magic. I felt kind of like an imposter that night. A wizard in their robes who's secretly just a clumsy kid trying to figure things out. It made me feel guilty because I wanted to admit it, but also happy because we figured it out together and saved the day. Now every time she needs help with numbers, she looks at me with those eyes full of faith. And even though I know deep down that math is still not my thing, part of me wants to live up to her belief in me. It's a weird mix of embarrassment and pride.
