When I Thought My 13-Year-Old Was Snitching On Me

So here's the thing. Last week, my daughter Lisa came home with this huge bag of candy and chips that she got from a school fundraiser. Normally, I wouldn't think twice about it, I mean, who doesn't love some good old fashioned junk food? But there was something fishy going on. First, she kept telling me to lock up her snacks because they were 'super secret.' That's when my alarm bells started ringing. Then came the sneaky little trips she'd take out of our house at odd hours like a ninja. I swear, if she didn't have that school fundraiser bag under her arm, I would've thought she was running off to become a spy or something equally thrilling. So here's what happened, and yes, this sounds way more dramatic than it actually was. One night while everyone else in the house had gone to bed (or so I thought), I heard shuffling around down in the basement. Now, our basement has been my go-to hideaway for years where I binge on all things sweet and salty. But since Lisa started her secret stash missions, I figured out it must be her taking more than just one night's share of treats. So, thinking fast (and let's face it, a bit paranoid), I decided to investigate myself. There was no way she could outsmart me, or so I told myself. After all, how sneaky can an almost-thirteen-year-old be? Long story short, I followed her down there with the stealth of a cat (which is pretty impressive at my age, might I add), only to find that what she was really up to had nothing to do with stealing my snacks. Turns out, Lisa was actually setting up some kind of 'surprise movie night' for all her friends. She had been collecting the treats and planning this surprise party down there for days without telling anyone. I was mortified, not because she was doing anything wrong, but because it turned out my wild imagination had led me to think she was up to something much more naughty than just throwing a party. So now I'm left wondering: do I tell her about how silly I got or let the whole thing blow over? And what does this say about my own tendency to assume the worst? Oh, and don't forget, after all that sneaking around, she didn't even need me to give permission for a movie night because it turned out everything was totally fine and legal. Back in my day, we had to sneak around just to watch TV! Can you believe it?
