I Fibbed About the Expiration Date

So there I was, standing in front of my kids last week with this container of yogurt that had a best-before date about five days ago. Now, you'd think that as a parent who prides herself on being honest and open with her children, I would just toss it out and start the day afresh. But something inside me thought, 'Hey, maybe one more day won't hurt,' so I placed the container back in the fridge without mentioning anything to anyone. And today, when my teen daughter asked if she could have some for breakfast, I felt a knot form in my stomach. Instead of telling her about the slightly dodgy date, I simply said it was fine and safe to eat. Now, I'm not sure why this small lie stuck with me all morning, I've been more guilty over the tasteless jam at the grocery store before, but there's just something about keeping that yogurt secret from my kids that nags at me. Maybe it’s because they’ll find out eventually anyway? Or perhaps it's just that white lies tend to stick around longer than one would think.
