The Quiet Neighbors Next Door

I’ve been freelancing from home for the past six months now. It’s an interesting change of pace after being in an office setting where you’re constantly surrounded by people and noise, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. My apartment building isn’t bustling; in fact, it’s one of those quiet places that makes you feel like everyone around is just as introverted or busy as you are. The unit directly next door to mine has been vacant for a while until two weeks ago when I noticed boxes being moved in late at night. Since then, there have been very few signs of life from the apartment. I can barely hear anything even if they’re making noise, it’s like their place is soundproofed or something. They keep a low profile and stay to themselves as far as I can tell. The silence has grown on me over time. It used to be nice, but now it feels isolating. Sometimes when my headphones are off during lunch breaks, I listen for the sounds of my neighbors going about their day. Even though it’s odd, there’s this wistful part of me that wishes they’d make a little more noise so I wouldn’t feel quite as alone. But then again, maybe it's just me being nosy and intrusive in their quiet bubble. Every now and then, when the night is especially still or the wind rustles through the trees outside our windows, my mind wanders to thoughts of what’s going on behind those walls next door. Are they okay? Are they happy with this lifestyle too? I don’t know why it affects me so much, maybe because I’m used to interacting daily in a bustling office where people talk and share stories. This new solitude, while providing peace from constant chatter, also leaves room for loneliness to creep in. So here’s my confession: sometimes when I'm alone with my thoughts and working on projects that feel endless, I wish we had more interaction in the building, even if it's just saying hi or nodding when you pass each other in the hallway. But at the same time, part of me feels like maybe they prefer their solitude too much for me to ever know what they think. I’m not asking anyone to solve this for me; I'm just venting to get these thoughts out into the open and figure out how I feel about it.
