I Took a Sick Day to Shop

Yesterday was the worst day at work ever. One of my patients had an allergic reaction that almost turned into anaphylactic shock. I was so freaked out, and I felt completely drained by the end of it. But when I got home, all I wanted to do was escape from everything patient-related for a while. So this morning, instead of going back in, I called in sick. My boss said it was fine because there's someone covering my shift today anyway. No one needs me, so why not? I told her that I'm just feeling extra run-down and need some rest. It wasn't exactly a lie, I really am kind of worn out. But instead of staying home like I should have, I spent the day shopping at the mall. It was blissful! No hospital smells or patients complaining about small things getting them down. Just music playing in the background and people passing by who are just trying to live their lives without worrying about health crises. I know that as a nurse, I need to put others before myself more than most other jobs might require. But isn't it okay to take care of yourself sometimes too? Or is everyone going to hate me now for using my sick day when I could have done something useful instead? Am I the asshole here? Should I be feeling guilty about enjoying a day off after a tough shift? Do you ever feel like your job owns your whole life and not even your weekends or days off are safe from its demands?
