The Office Prank Gone Awry

I am in my 50s and work at a large corporation where I've been for decades. It's not the most stimulating job, but it pays well and has its perks. Over the years, I've become somewhat of an office veteran, with newer employees often looking up to me or even deferring to my judgment. Recently, our new intern started working here, a bright-eyed young man named Sam who seems eager to impress everyone. One day, at lunchtime, while most colleagues were outside enjoying the sunshine and fresh air, I decided to pull a prank on him to lighten up his spirits. With the help of another longtime colleague, we rigged Sam's computer so that when he returned from lunch, it would play an obnoxious sound repeatedly until he figured out how to turn it off. Initially, I thought this was harmless fun and just another way to break the ice with him, but as soon as Sam came back inside and started hearing the sound, panic set in. He quickly tried to ask colleagues for help but was met mostly with indifference or laughter. The day went by slowly as he struggled to get his computer functioning normally again. By the end of the workday, I felt awful about what had happened. Sam looked defeated and embarrassed rather than amused. Reflecting back on it now, perhaps I wasn't thinking through how such a prank might affect someone who isn't well-established in their career yet. So here's my question: Am I the asshole? Is this kind of behavior acceptable among colleagues or should we have shown more support to Sam instead of playing tricks on him?
