I Sneak in Soda When They Aren't Looking

You know how they say everything tastes better with a little extra something? Well, it's true. I was making my kids' lunches yesterday morning when the thought struck me to sneak in a soda for them too. It wasn't because they begged for one or anything like that; no, it was more out of my own selfishness. I wanted them to have a tiny rebellion against their strict diet and enjoy something sweet once in a while. But here's the twist, my husband is really health-conscious about what we feed our kids, so he'd go ballistic if he knew. That's why I've been slipping sodas into their lunchboxes every now and then under the cover of snacks and fruits. It feels like this little secret rebellion against him, but it also makes me feel bad because isn't a parent supposed to be completely honest with their kids? And who am I fooling anyway, soda is just not good for them. I mean, I get why he's so strict. He grew up in a home where soda was a regular thing and look at him now, always worried about his health after all the years of damage done by less healthy habits as a kid. But sometimes, you know? Sometimes it feels like they need to enjoy life too, not just be on some diet all day every day. I find myself justifying it over and over in my head, because this is probably how he felt sneaking sodas as a child when his parents were strict about sugar intake. So maybe I'm doing the right thing by giving them a little taste of freedom? But then, what kind of parent am I if I hide things from them? So here's to hoping that one day my kids will understand why I did this for them and not see it as something bad or wrong, just another lesson learned about balance in life.
