Tired Mistakes at Work...

So... I've been working night shifts as a security guard for the last six months. It's tough getting used to it, but most of my coworkers are cool and we help each other out when things get hectic. Last week though, something happened that has me doubting myself and if I'm being the asshole here or not... So, I'll lay out what happened and then see what you all think. It was around 3 AM, and it's usually pretty quiet at this hour. The other guy on night shift called in sick last minute, so now I had to work double for him. I was starting to feel really tired... My eyes were heavy, but I tried to stay alert by walking around the building every half-hour or so. I noticed one of our residents hadn't come out of their apartment in a couple days, even though it's odd behavior for them. So I decided to knock on their door and check if everything was okay... When no answer came after several attempts, I became worried they might need help. We have strict policies against entering someone's home without permission or pressing the right buttons, but something inside me felt like this situation needed intervention... I thought about it for a moment, debating my options. In my mind, there were two scenarios: one where I respect their privacy and check back later, and another where I use our emergency protocol to enter if someone is in immediate danger. The latter involves breaking in, which goes against everything we're trained to do unless lives are on the line. I tried calling for backup from my team... But they were too busy with other stuff. So, after what felt like an eternity of contemplation and anxiety... I made the decision to unlock their door using a spare key we keep in case of emergencies (we're supposed to have approval from management before doing so). Once inside, everything seemed normal, clean sheets on the bed, no signs of distress... The resident was sleeping soundly. It took me a moment to process what I had just done. On one hand, it felt like the right thing at the time because I was worried they could be hurt or unwell. But on another hand... I violated protocol and policy without explicit permission from anyone. Now, I'm stuck wondering if I made the right choice that night... Did my actions put me over the line into being an asshole? Or does everyone make tough calls in situations like this sometimes? Should I have just left them alone, or was it better to take action based on my concerns? I've told no one about this yet and am struggling with whether or not to come clean... Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Am I the asshole here?
