Just Started Learning Origami, Am I the Asshole?

So, I've always admired origami but never tried it myself. A few weeks ago, I saw a post online about a local origami club meeting and decided to check it out. Turns out, there are some pretty talented people in this hobby community! I was so impressed by everyone's work that I felt like I had to prove something to them. So, here's the thing: after attending three meetings, I found myself trying to compete with their skill levels by making my own complex designs. I'm not good at origami yet, far from it! But I didn't want people to think I was just there for fun and community stuff when they were all working so hard on their techniques. I've been spending hours every day practicing these complicated models, even though my hands are aching by the end of it. When I go to meetings now, instead of chatting or hanging out with everyone, I focus solely on showing off what I can do and getting feedback on my work. It feels weird because nobody seems to mind me doing that, but deep down, I think I'm being a bit self-centered. Am I the asshole for trying so hard to fit in? Or am I allowed to feel like I need to prove myself sometimes when starting something new? What should I do if this isn't how people usually interact at these meetings?
