The Day I Took Over My Coworker's Night Shift...

So yeah, this happened recently at the warehouse. I work nights as a picker and packer for an e-commerce company. Usually, my buddy Mike works the midnight to 8 AM shift... but he called in sick one day without giving me any notice. Now, the place was already hectic enough with holiday rush season approaching... so when they asked if anyone could cover his spot, I thought 'Sure, why not? No big deal...' or so I told myself. But here's what no one considers... Mike is really, really fast at this job. He's like a robot programmed to pick up packages and scan barcodes as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, me... I’m more of a 'let’s take it easy and get things right' kind of guy. So while he was sick, every single package that came into the warehouse somehow magically found its way onto his side of the pick-and-pack table. Now comes my confession: when they asked if I could step in for Mike... instead of being honest about how I might not be as quick or efficient as him... I fibbed a bit and said 'Sure, no problem!' And so there I was, trying to keep up with the impossible workload that Mike usually manages effortlessly. The pressure was intense... After several hours of frantic scrambling... just trying to stay on top of things without getting into real trouble... it hit me: this isn't working out well at all. But hey, it’s too late now for any kind of honest confession or opting-out without looking like a total failure... and besides, I've made my bed. So here's the moral dilemma I'm grappling with: do I admit how poorly I handled things to our boss? Or just keep pretending everything is fine and hope that no one notices all the mistakes piling up behind the scenes? It feels wrong either way... And now you're probably thinking, 'So what’s your point?' Well... my point is there's more to this than meets the eye when it comes to filling in for absent coworkers. I might have just turned myself into a walking mistake machine for eight hours, but at least I've got a story to tell about it, right?...
