Patient's Family Keeps Taking My Break Time
Anonymous Sassy Snitch #758 · General
I've been a nurse at the local community hospital for nearly five years now. I started when I was fresh out of nursing school and fell in love with both the job itself and the close-knit feel of our team. We're not the biggest hospital, but everyone knows each other's names, which makes it easier to take care of our patients on a personal level. Lately though, there's been this family who has their elderly mother as an inpatient here. They're a couple with two kids, all around my age group, and have been staying by her side since she was admitted three weeks ago. The first week, they were great about giving each other breaks to take care of the basic necessities like food and rest, you know how it goes, nurses respect that kind of thing in patients' families. But then the second week rolled around, and I noticed something strange. This family began taking my scheduled break times for their own convenience. At first, it was just one or two days where they were there instead of me during my lunch hour, but now it's becoming a regular occurrence, sometimes even blocking out half an hour of my evening shift for themselves. It feels like they assume that because I'm here working and they're the primary caretakers, their needs come first. And to be honest, it's been eating at me. As much as I want to keep a professional demeanor with them and not make waves in what is already a tense situation, this constant intrusion on my personal time feels like an infringement. I know that patients' families need support too, but so do the nurses who are here to help both them and their loved ones. The hospital isn't a hotel, it's a place where people fight for their lives or try to recover from devastating illnesses, and sometimes, it can take its toll on all of us. So now I find myself torn between feeling sympathetic towards their needs as human beings and frustrated with how they seem to prioritize themselves over my own well-being. In the end, I've decided not to say anything for now, but writing this down has made me realize that it's okay to set boundaries, even if those boundaries are uncomfortable or awkward to impose. It's a reminder that being kind doesn't mean sacrificing your own health and peace of mind.
