The Office Tupperware Lie

So there's this tupperware container I've had for ages. It was my grandma's and it holds the perfect amount of pasta or rice, plus leftovers fit snug inside with no air leaking. Last week at work, we went through a phase where someone kept stealing snacks from the communal fridge. We even put notes up saying 'Please respect our food,' but nothing changed. One day, I left my container in there after putting my lunch inside it. When I came back to grab it for dinner, it was gone! There was no note or explanation - just a mystery missing container. Naturally, I freaked out because this thing is special to me and it's not something you find at Target. I told everyone at work that someone stole my tupperware on accident while getting their lunch. It wasn't true, but I felt like I had no choice after searching everywhere and finding no trace of it. I lied about the whole story, saying I was okay with the mix-up because there were snacks to replace my lost container. Deep down though, I know I'm the asshole here. Lying isn't cool, even for something as small as a tupperware container from my grandma. Now everyone looks at me funny every time they put their lunch away and I feel awful about how this must have hurt someone's feelings who actually thought they accidentally took it. I guess sometimes you get so caught up in protecting yourself that you forget to think of others.
