The Chocolate Chip Cover-Up

So here's this thing that happened a while back. It started with my son’s school bake sale. We always try to make something healthy and unique, but this year I hit a bit of a wall. I was out of fresh fruits for my usual fruit bars and didn't have much time before the event. Plus, there were already too many brownies and cupcakes. So what did I do? I baked chocolate chip cookies because they're easy and everyone loves them, right? But then disaster struck when I noticed that our neighbor's kid was selling their signature sugar cookies at the bake sale. Sugar cookies? Really? Same day, same event! And not just any old sugar cookies either; these were like works of art, crispy edges with a slightly chewy center and all sorts of icing designs. My competitive spirit kicked in, but instead of throwing in the towel and calling it a loss (which would be admitting defeat), I decided to make my chocolate chip cookies look better. So what did I do? I took some frosting from another leftover batch and piped little stars around each cookie like they were special treats too. Now comes the tricky part: explaining why these plain old cookies suddenly had fancy decorations. Here's where I feel a bit guilty about it all because I fibbed to my son, telling him that I spent hours perfecting his recipe for the bake sale. But in reality? It was just some quick frosting work. And to top it off, they ended up selling surprisingly well, likely due to how pretty and festive they looked rather than the taste (though let's be honest, chocolate chip cookies are always good). Reflecting on this now, I wonder if I really needed to lie about the effort put into those cookies just because of a bit of friendly competition. Did I overthink it or was my strategy actually clever? Was I justified in wanting our entry to stand out at the bake sale even if that meant doing things a little dishonestly? It's all a big question mark now, and here we are, me still thinking about whether this small act of deceit was worth it.
