When I Took My Kids' Halloween Candy and Kept It for Myself

So there I was last night, my living room strewn with costumes and plastic pumpkin buckets filled to the brim with candy from a successful trick-or-treating night. My kids were tucked into bed early because they've got school tomorrow. Usually on nights like this, I let them indulge but only in small amounts before bedtime. But tonight, something funny happened, I sneaked into their stash while they were sleeping and grabbed my favorite candy: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. It was a total impulse thing; no one would have even noticed if I just took three or four pieces. I'm not proud of it, but I couldn't resist the temptation to keep them hidden in our bedroom drawer for later snacking. And then I had another brilliant idea, or so I thought at the time: why stop there? I proceeded to take all sorts of goodies from their candy hauls, Twix bars, Snickers, and even a couple of bags of Skittles. When they found out this morning, my kids were understandably upset. They gave me that look you give someone when you catch them eating the last cookie without asking. I tried to explain it with humor, saying I needed to 'research' for future Halloween treats and had a plan to replace their missing candy over the coming days. But deep down, I knew this was one of those moments where I might have crossed a line. My kids work hard getting that candy door-to-door each year and deserve to enjoy it. So now I'm left with these bags of sweets, feeling like an overgrown kid myself but also feeling guilty for disappointing my little ones who look up to me. Maybe next Halloween, I'll buy them their favorites in advance so we both can indulge without conflict.
