Moved Here Two Weeks Ago and Already Telling White Lies?

So I just moved to this new city a couple of weeks ago, and I’m still trying to figure everything out. I started a job at this cool little bakery down the street from my apartment. Everything was going well until yesterday when they gave me an order for 15 chocolate chip cookies, yep, you guessed it: I screwed up big time and handed them a bag with only ten cookies inside! Can you believe the nerve? In the moment of panic, I didn’t want to face the embarrassment in front of all my coworkers and customers, so I just lied through my teeth. 'Uh, let’s see here,' I said, while trying to look natural as if I had everything under control, ‘I need to double-check on the oven for a moment because there's a chance we got this one mixed up.' Then I quickly ducked into the back room and made those five cookies super fast. It felt like an eternity until I could finally return with the full bag of goodies, all smiles. But as soon as I saw my boss's suspicious look, I knew I was in for some trouble. Anyway, this morning on my way to work, I decided that it might be a good idea to buy her flowers as a peace offering. So I stopped by the local florist and picked out this beautiful bouquet of daisies, they’re one of her favorites! And when she saw me come into work with the flowers, her face lit up like Christmas morning. It was so relieving that I could actually take care of this mess I created. But now I'm left wondering if it's okay to lie just to save face or if I should have just owned up and dealt with any consequences. Hmm, maybe next time I'll stick to a career in the ice cream shop instead.
