...When I Should Have Listened To My Kids...

Anonymous Sly Gossip #770 · General

I was so excited to teach my kids how to ride their bikes without training wheels. They've been begging for days to try it, and we finally had the perfect Saturday morning. The park was empty and sunny; it seemed like everything would go smoothly. But then, just as I was about to help them up onto the bikes, a little voice in my head whispered, 'Maybe you should wait one more week until they're taller?' You know that feeling when your gut tells you something is off but your pride pushes forward? Yeah, that. My kids were so eager though, and I didn't want to disappoint them or look like I couldn't teach something as simple as bike riding. So we started. And it was a disaster. They kept falling, they cried, and worst of all, my eldest got a nasty scrape on her knee right in front of everyone at the playground. She looked so embarrassed and heartbroken; she wanted to go home immediately. But I persisted, thinking if I could just push through for ten more minutes, everything would be better. It wasn't. Instead, it felt like I had ruined their special day with my stubbornness. Now they're both too sore and tired from all the falls. They said they don't want to try again until summer break, which is three months away. All because I couldn't listen to that tiny voice telling me we weren't ready. Looking back... I feel so silly for pushing them beyond their readiness in a moment of pride. If only I had given it more thought and followed my intuition instead of forcing them into something too soon. It's just one of those things you do as a parent where the guilt lingers long after the event.
