When I Tried to Get Out of Babysitting Duty and Failed Miserably

So here's the deal. Last week my parents asked me if I could help watch my little sister for a couple of hours while they went out to dinner with some friends. It was supposed to be an easy gig, but there are these weird family dynamics where everyone thinks the middle child is somehow responsible for everything and should always be ready to step up. So naturally, when I tried to explain that Friday evening was my work shift at the bookstore, they didn't even bat an eyelid. 'You can bring your work home,' my mom said with a smile that made me feel like I had a sign above my head saying ‘Duty-bound Martyr.’ Now, normally I would just go along with it; after all, family comes first and all that. But there’s this new girl at school named Emma who I’ve been trying to catch up with for weeks now, and Friday night was when she wanted to hang out and maybe explore the downtown scene a bit. I know what you’re thinking: 'So why didn’t you just say no?' Well, because of my reputation as being a good kid. If they found out I skipped babysitting duty for a date, it would be like breaking every family code. I tried to come up with the best excuse ever. I even went so far as to make a call pretending to be from work saying there was an emergency and that I needed to stay in touch just in case they called back. But my mom saw right through me, giving me this look like she could read my thoughts. The next day at school, everyone knew about it, my friends thought it was funny, but Emma… well, let's just say it wasn't a good ice-breaker. I ended up spending the evening watching cartoons with my little sister and making pancakes because that’s all kids really want when their big sibling has better plans. I still feel guilty for trying to get out of something I promised myself I would do, especially after the charade fell apart so spectacularly. But now, instead of feeling like a reliable middle child who steps up in times of need, I feel more like an unreliable older brother who can’t handle his responsibilities without getting caught in some crazy lie. Sometimes I wonder if I should just skip the guilt and start being honest with myself about what I want and don't want. But then again, maybe that’s a confession for another day.
