Caught in My Own Web of Lies

So here's the thing, I've been lying to my kids about something small for a while now. It feels petty and silly when I say it out loud, but at the time, it seemed like a good idea. You know how sometimes you just don't want to deal with something or maybe feel too lazy to get up? Yeah, that was me. It all started about three weeks ago. My daughter asked if she could invite her friend over for a playdate tomorrow afternoon. I checked my calendar and saw I had nothing planned, so I said sure. The thing is, I hadn't told the babysitter yet, and it's been really busy at work lately. Now here’s where it gets tricky, I didn’t want to bother with getting in touch with her that day or worrying about figuring out another sitter on short notice. Plus, my husband was going to be traveling for a business trip that weekend too. So instead of being honest and saying we needed more time to think about it, I told the kids their babysitter was sick. It felt like an easy way out at the moment, but now I’m feeling guilty. My daughter asked me yesterday how her friend’s mom was doing because she was worried about getting a cold too. My son mentioned he hoped his sitter got better soon and wanted to send a get-well card for her. I didn’t tell them that their babysitter wasn’t actually sick, just busy with something else this week. I could have been more upfront and found another solution, but instead, I went with the easier route. Now it’s like I’ve created an entire fake narrative around a simple scheduling issue. The lie feels so small, yet here I am wondering if I’m the asshole for not just being honest about it in the first place. Maybe it would have been better to let them know we needed more time and help figure out another playdate option together. But now that they’re worried about their sitter, I feel like a bit of an ass for making things up. It’s funny how one tiny lie can create such a big headache down the line.
