My Little White Lie About My Coding Skills

So there's this thing that's been bugging me for the past few weeks. It started when I joined a new project at work where we're working on some pretty complex algorithms and machine learning models. Our team leader has this reputation for really digging into our code to make sure it meets certain standards before we deploy anything. Now, let me preface this by saying that generally speaking, my skills are decent enough, but I'm definitely not a rock star when it comes to the specific areas we're working on. For example, while I know Python and some other languages pretty well, my expertise in advanced ML libraries is not as strong as I would like. Anyway, our team leader, who I'll call Alex, has this thing where he asks us all to share a little about our background during the first meeting with new projects. So here's what happened: when it was my turn, instead of being honest and saying 'Hey, I'm still learning these advanced algorithms,' I sort of fudged the truth a bit. I said something like, 'I've got some experience with machine learning libraries and have worked on complex models before.' The way I told this little white lie was that it felt important to position myself as someone who could contribute meaningfully from day one without needing too much handholding or training up to speed. Plus, the idea of admitting my lack of expertise seemed embarrassing. Afterwards, though, every time we have a meeting where Alex goes over our code, I feel this knot in my stomach. What if he digs into something I've worked on and realizes I'm not as knowledgeable as I made out? Every time someone asks for details about an algorithm or library I mentioned having experience with, I cringe a bit. I know this isn't the end of the world, after all, no one expects me to be an expert right off the bat. But it's weird how this small fib is eating at me more and more each day. What should I do? Should I come clean about my skill level, even though it might make Alex think less of me as a new team member? Or can I just toughen up and hope that I'll learn enough over time to keep the lie from being exposed?
