My Grandson's Lego Collection Is Organized Better Than Mine

So I’ve been babysitting my grandson Jack for the last couple of months while his parents are busy with work. He’s an eight-year-old who absolutely adores Legos, and every time he comes over, we spend a good chunk of the day building new creations. What really got to me though was seeing how meticulously organized his Lego sets were back at home. Every single piece had its place, categorized by type and color. It’s something I could never manage with my own collection when I was a kid, let alone now as an adult. One Saturday afternoon after we finished our usual Lego adventure, Jack went to grab some snacks from the kitchen while I tidied up around the living room. That's when I made the mistake of taking a quick glance at his storage system and immediately started sorting through it myself, rearranging things to my liking for easier access, mostly just moving pieces between different containers without realizing what I was doing until much later. When Jack came back in and saw that, he froze in shock. He looked devastated, like I had ruined a masterpiece or something. It took me hours of explaining and apologizing before he would even speak to me again. The funny thing is, I feel bad for messing with his organizational system but at the same time, there’s a part of me that still wishes I could play around with other people's stuff without consequences like this. It was one of those moments when you realize how much you’ve lost touch with what matters to kids, and also how different generations handle order and chaos. Maybe it was just my own nostalgia talking, but after that day, every time I see Jack’s Lego pieces in perfect rows and columns, a part of me cringes knowing that I’ll probably never fully understand this kind of obsession for organizing.
