I Ruined My Brother's Birthday Present Before He Even Got It

So last year for my brother’s birthday (he’s a junior in high school), our parents surprised him with an Xbox Series X. This was a big deal, especially since he and I both saved up to buy one but couldn't afford it on our own. I was super jealous but also excited for him, because he loves video games like Rocket League and Red Dead Redemption 2. But here's the thing: my family has this rule that you can't unwrap your gifts until everyone is ready to open them together. It's a silly tradition but one we’ve kept up since I was a kid. So when my parents brought home the Xbox in its box, I had to wait two weeks before being able to see it or touch it. The package looked so sleek and cool; you could tell by just looking at it that it was something special. I knew if anyone else opened it accidentally, we'd have to start over and risk ruining our tradition. But on the night before his birthday, I couldn’t resist peeking inside. Just a quick look, I told myself I wouldn't touch anything. When I lifted the lid just enough to see what was inside, there it was: this beautiful Xbox. And next to it, all these cool little game controllers and adapters. I swear, my hands started shaking as soon as they touched that stuff. It’s like something snapped in me, and suddenly I didn’t care about traditions anymore; I just wanted to be the first one to hold those controllers and feel what it was like to play them. So, with sweaty palms and a racing heart, I opened up all the boxes and took everything out, setting them aside carefully so they'd look untouched when we rewrapped them for his birthday. The next day at the party, everyone gathered around to open gifts. My brother looked over my way with excitement as he held the wrapped Xbox, but then his face dropped when he opened it and saw that all the accessories were gone. I tried playing it off by saying I was helping him unwrap, but the guilt in my eyes probably gave me away. He didn't say much after that; just a little disappointed look before moving on to other gifts. It’s been almost a year since then, and I still feel terrible about what happened. My parents were upset too, they thought it was some kid at school or something because the packaging looked untouched. But everyone else tried to brush it off as nothing major; after all, he did get an Xbox, right? Still though, I can’t help feeling like a jerk for spoiling my brother’s birthday present before we even got there.
