Confessing My Nurse Secret Lie

Anonymous Impish Gossip #834 · General

So, this is going to sound really silly but it's eating away at me. Today, I was working the late shift at the hospital and one of our patients had a pretty strict no-visitor policy because of their condition. A relative called though, wanting an update on how they were doing. Now, here's where things got tricky... The patient wasn't exactly in great spirits that day. They'd been feeling extra down and I could tell just calling would only make them feel worse. So instead of telling the truth about how bad they seemed to be, I spun a little story about them being 'okay' but tired, as if they were having one of their better days. It felt like such a small thing at the time, but now that I'm typing this out, it feels so wrong. I mean, I know we're supposed to be honest with our patients and their families, right? But sometimes...sometimes you do what you think is best for someone's emotional state, even if it means bending the truth a tiny bit. Now every time I see that patient, I'm like 'Did they notice?' Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed they don't and hope they recover soon!
