I Spilled My Heart Out By Mistaking A Latte For A Customer's Coffee Order

Yesterday was one of those days where everything felt off. I had a new barista shadowing me, and it’s like she was making everything worse. My manager left to run an errand right when the lunch rush started, leaving us short-handed and overwhelmed. I was supposed to be the experienced one here, but I just couldn’t get anything done correctly. I made this mistake with a customer's latte order, mixing it up for another drink entirely. Instead of handing over their coffee, I ended up pouring what looked like someone else’s latte into her cup, only it wasn't. It was the new barista’s training drink, a half-made concoction sitting on the counter that she had abandoned while helping out with orders. When I turned around to hand it over and saw my error, all I could do was stutter an apology as the customer looked at me like I’d poured her cup full of lava. She walked away without a word after grabbing another drink from the barista who was there to help. But then something crazy happened, I couldn’t take back what had come out of my mouth while trying to make it right. My heart started racing, and before I could stop myself, I blurted out this confession about liking her, a sweet girl from my yoga class who I know is engaged, and how much better I would feel if she was here instead. I felt so embarrassed when the barista’s face turned red after overhearing. The whole place went quiet as everyone stared at me like I had a giant neon sign saying ‘clueless.’ And just to make it worse, her fiancé is actually one of my regulars who walks in right then and asks if his coffee is ready. So now the barista avoids me on breaks, and I’m stuck playing catch-up trying to make things right at work. Today’s been a series of disasters because I can’t stop thinking about how I messed up that order and spilled my secret. It feels like everyone knows except for her, and that makes it worse.
