I Tried To Impress My Boss By Stealing Snacks From The Break Room

So here's the deal. I started my new job last week as a junior marketing associate at this big firm, and from day one, I wanted to make a good impression on everyone, especially my boss, Jane. She’s kind of like the golden child of the office; all the upper management think she’s doing amazing work, and every time there's a meeting, they mention how great her initiatives are doing for sales. Anyway, being new and trying hard to fit in, I decided that the best way to get noticed was by showing my initiative. Now, part of what makes me a little nervous about getting ahead is that I don't have many friends at work yet; everyone seems so close with each other already, bonding over coffee and snacks during breaks. So one day, we had a big meeting, and after it ended, Jane casually mentioned needing some new supplies for her upcoming project. Without thinking too much about it, I rushed to the break room to find snacks that looked fancy enough (or maybe just expensive enough) to add to our inventory, so when she came back from lunch, there'd be something on hand for whatever she needed. But here's where things got a bit ridiculous, I ended up taking some of her personal snacks too. I thought 'If Jane needs them, why not have extras?' And then the kicker? The snack was only labeled with an unclear note that said something about it being from one of her suppliers as a sample. So technically, they weren’t even clearly marked as hers. But now thinking back on it, I just kind of jumped to conclusions and overstepped. After work that day, I felt like my heart was in my throat. I kept thinking 'Am I the asshole for taking snacks when there wasn't a clear sign saying they were off-limits?' Sure enough, Jane found out somehow later that week (she's shrewd), and she didn’t exactly hide her disappointment. She said it was nice of me to think about keeping stock up but suggested I needed better boundaries and respect for others' property. So yeah, my plan backfired spectacularly. Lesson learned: Don't assume things are fair game just because they're in a communal area; you should always ask first. Hopefully next time I can impress her with something more thoughtful than stealing snacks!
