..Oops...My Lie About Not Having Time for Lunch Breaks

Anonymous Scandalous Busybody #982 · General

So yeah, I've been having this...awkward little situation at work lately. You know how sometimes you just want to avoid everyone and have some peace? Well, my coworkers are pretty talkative during lunch breaks, and the conversation topics tend to go in directions that leave me feeling more bored than anything else. So a few weeks back, I started making up reasons why I wasn't going out for lunch...and it's been this ongoing lie ever since. Like, every day around noon when everyone starts packing their stuff and chatting about lunch plans, I just nod and smile, saying something like, 'Oh yeah, I've got some extra work to catch up on today...' or the classic, 'I really need to finish this project before heading out for my break.' Of course, the truth is that I'm just not in the mood for small talk about last night's TV shows and what everyone had for breakfast. But here's the thing...while it felt like a good idea at first, it's slowly becoming this big deal. I mean, who doesn't love eating alone with your sandwich and Netflix? It's kind of nice to have that quiet time to myself, but now I feel a bit bad about avoiding my coworkers so much. And honestly, deep down, I know part of me is just being cowardly...maybe there are interesting conversations happening that I'm missing out on. The guilt has been creeping up on me the past few days, especially since one of my colleagues mentioned they were thinking about switching to a different team because no one ever stops for chats with them. That got me thinking, am I contributing to someone feeling lonely or unwelcome by not being there? It's just...so much pressure all of a sudden. So now I find myself standing at the lunch counter, looking down at my phone, and wondering if it's too late to start telling the truth. Maybe I should actually go eat with everyone and see what happens... but then again, what if it ends up being just as boring? And maybe people would even notice that I've been lying all this time. Ugh... I guess I'm at a bit of a crossroads now, either continue this little fib because it's comfortable, or face the awkwardness and just be honest with everyone about what I'm really doing during my lunch break. It's not like I can keep pretending forever, right? But seriously, who wants to deal with that kind of social pressure?
