I Lied About Finishing My Homework

So today at school, I was hanging out in the library during study hall, scrolling through Instagram and thinking about which TikTok trends to try next. Suddenly, Ms. Lopez comes over with that clipboard she always carries around like it's her lifeline (seriously, is there a checklist for everything?). She asks me if I finished my history homework. And here’s where things get tricky because the truth is, I was so caught up in planning my weekend trip to the mall and trying to figure out what outfit would make everyone notice me that I totally forgot about the damn assignment. So instead of telling her the real reason why my homework wasn’t done (which would have been admitting defeat), I said it was just a bit more challenging than I thought. Ms. Lopez gave me this look, like she knew exactly what was going on, but she let it go with some advice about time management and not letting distractions take over. I guess the thing is, sometimes when you want something bad enough, your mind plays tricks on you. Like how I kept thinking if only I had finished my homework yesterday instead of spending hours trying to impress everyone online, maybe Ms. Lopez would have let me off the hook today without having to make up a story. Anyway, now here I am feeling pretty guilty about it all and wondering when the truth will catch up with me because honestly, history isn’t exactly my favorite subject. Maybe tomorrow I’ll start on that assignment early just so I can say to Ms. Lopez, “Look, I’ve been working hard,” instead of trying to weave another lie around my laziness. But then again, who am I kidding? There’s always a next time with excuses and maybe one day I won’t feel so guilty about it all, or at least that’s what I keep telling myself while planning my weekend trip. Who needs history homework anyway when you can shop till you drop?
