Why Am I So Shy at Work When My Dog Loves Me?
Anonymous Scandalous Schemer #606 · General
Hey everyone! This is the first confession post and it's about my weird home work dynamic with my golden retriever, Buddy. First off, let me just tell you how amazing he is. He’s like a super-smart friend who never judges or leaves you in the cold when you’re down. He loves to play fetch even after ten rounds and gets so excited whenever I take him out for walks that his tail wags faster than any fan at a concert. Now, here's the funny part: I'm such a pro with Buddy that it makes me wonder why I struggle to talk to other people during work. For example, I’m a freelance graphic designer and most of my clients prefer video calls over emails or messages. But oh boy, when the Zoom link lights up on my screen, my heart starts racing like I have a marathon ahead. It’s just nerves, but I feel like I should be able to nail these meetings with ease after having so many conversations with Buddy. He doesn’t care if I mess up or if I’m not as polished as the last time we spoke; he just thinks it's funny and licks my face instead of hanging up on me. Yet, when talking to real people (even friendly clients), I end up stuttering through my sentences like a toddler learning to talk. I know I should be grateful for these video calls since they’re part of earning money that lets me spoil Buddy with his favorite treats and toys, but there's something about it all that feels off. I wish I could find the same joy in talking to humans as I do when sharing a peanut butter treat with Buddy or catching a ball together. So here’s my question for you folks out there: Am I just overthinking this? Is everyone like me and have trouble adjusting between pet conversation and professional client talk, or is it just me who's an awkward mess when the camera turns on? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! And if anyone has had similar experiences or even better ways to manage work anxiety, please do share them. I’m ready to learn how to be as cool under pressure with humans as I am while playing fetch!
