My First Day At My New Job Wasn't What I Hoped It Would Be

I started my new job last week at a small tech company downtown. I was so excited because it's been a dream of mine to work in software development since I was a kid. The day before, I couldn’t sleep from all the excitement and anticipation. But on my first actual day, reality hit me hard. The office space is quite cramped with cubicles packed together like sardines. My desk wasn't set up properly yet, so I had to use this tiny temporary station that was uncomfortable and cluttered. By mid-morning, I felt like an outsider since everyone else seemed to have been there for a while, chatting away about ongoing projects and inside jokes. I tried my best to fit in; I introduced myself, asked questions about the work environment, and even offered to help organize files scattered around the office. But after lunch, when I attempted to share some ideas with the team on a project we were working on, nobody seemed interested or engaged. They politely nodded but didn't give any feedback or input. By the time 5 PM rolled around, I felt like crying in my car on the way home. This job that I had been looking forward to was turning out to be stressful and isolating. My initial excitement turned into self-doubt. Was it just a bad day? Or am I not cut out for this after all? That night, I barely slept at all, replaying everything in my head over and over again. It's a tough feeling when your dream doesn't feel like what you expected at first glance.
