I Pretended to Like the Company Christmas Party

Hey everyone, I know it's small potatoes but there’s this thing that happened last year at work that keeps bugging me. The company threw one of those big, mandatory Christmas parties where they serve free drinks and food and play silly games. Now, here’s the deal, I’m actually not a huge fan of all that. It felt like another chance to schmooze or get caught up in office politics, which I could do without. But then people started talking about it, how “fun” it was going to be and so on. And you know what? I joined the chatter with my own version of ‘Oh yeah, totally looking forward to it,’ even though that wasn’t really me at all. It’s just one of those things where you want everyone else to think you’re into something because you don’t want them to assume there’s something wrong with you or that you don't care about the team. I mean, it was a little lie, but it got me thinking about why we feel compelled to go along with these expectations sometimes. The funny part is, once I actually went to the party and had a drink or two and let my guard down, I ended up having a decent time! So in retrospect, maybe there’s something good about being spontaneous and not worrying so much about appearances, you know? But hey, it was still pretty petty of me at the start to pretend.
