When I Used My Teacher Power to Impress Alex at Lunch Today

So today at lunch, there was this kid named Alex who's in my class and he always seems so smart. I know teachers shouldn't really think about students like that, but honestly, teaching for seven years has made me a bit of an authority figure type when it comes to the kids here. And sometimes that slips into some silly territory, where I feel like I should use my position as a teacher to make myself look good in front of them. Anyway, Alex was eating his lunch with some other friends and there happened to be a really cool experiment going on in one of the science classrooms next door. I thought, 'What better way to impress him than by being all knowledgeable?' So I went over and asked if they could show me what they were doing. They explained it for about five minutes before returning to their lunch. Then I joined back with Alex saying, 'You know, there’s some pretty amazing stuff happening in the science lab right now.' It felt a bit silly but also kind of funny because he just shrugged and said okay. I’m not sure if it made him think any differently about me, but honestly, that's probably my goal. And who cares if it’s a little immature? Sometimes you need to let your inner schoolyard queen out for a bit, even at thirty-five!
