When I Took the Bigger Slice of Pizza and Regretted It All Night Long

So this happened last night. We had just finished work for the week and everyone was in a good mood. My friends and I decided to order some pizza for dinner before calling it quits. Now, there's something you should know about me: I'm not particularly big on food rules but I do have one very clear one, I take the bigger slice of pizza every single time. It's like my little power move that makes me feel less insignificant in life. But this particular night, after getting a couple slices and starting to eat, something just didn't sit right with me. The look on my friend Lily’s face as she pointedly picked at her smaller piece while I savored the bigger slice was enough for me to feel like the biggest jerk alive. The rest of the evening went by in this haze of discomfort and regret. I could tell that there were some awkward glances exchanged, but nobody said anything directly to me about it. We ended up heading home soon after, with everyone else seeming a little more subdued than usual, not that they’d ever come out and say it was because of my pizza antics. I spent the whole night tossing and turning over how selfish I had been in taking all the good stuff for myself instead of sharing. Even though we're close friends who've seen each other through thick and thin, something about this felt like a breach in our trust. It wasn't until this morning that I mustered up the courage to message Lily and apologize, explaining my feelings over the bigger slice and how it doesn’t reflect how I feel about her as a friend. Now here I am, feeling a bit better for having acknowledged my actions and taken steps towards making things right. But there’s still this lingering sadness because I know I’ve lost something in that moment, not just a slice of pizza, but maybe a little part of our friendship too.
