That Time I Overheard and Ruined an Adorable Teenage Crush

So here's what happened. I work as a bartender at this dive bar in the old part of town, and last Wednesday was just one of those nights where everything felt off. We were slammed, but it wasn't busy enough for me to feel really on point with my usual cheerful demeanor. You know how you get when you're having an odd day? I think even a couple regulars noticed because they asked if something was wrong as they were leaving. Then this cute high school girl comes in, about 15 or so. She's sitting at the bar next to some guy who looks like he's around my age - mid-twenties. They're whispering to each other and giggling a lot, which made me think she had a crush on him. I don't know why it bothered me so much seeing her look all starry-eyed over someone older than her. So I'm wiping down the bar when I overhear them talking. She tells him she's been thinking about how to tell him that she likes him for a while, but was too scared to do anything until now. He laughs and says it's just a crush, no big deal. That made me bristle inside - like who does he think he is telling her off? I felt so protective of this girl despite barely knowing her. Anyway, that's when the worst happens. She asks him if he likes her too, and he sort of looks at her and mumbles something about how it would be inappropriate because they're not really friends or anything. I couldn't just sit there hearing this! So out loud to both of them, I start telling them why crushes are special and shouldn't be dismissed so easily. I go on for a while making up some stuff about teenagers finding their first love and how it's a big deal, trying my best to cheer her up. But she just gets more upset as I talk. She stands up suddenly and says there's no point in talking anymore if he doesn't see her worth, then runs out crying. The guy looks at me in shock before leaving too. I feel like the world's biggest jerk now. I wanted to cheer her up but ended up making things worse by prying into their private moment. It wasn't my place to try and fix what didn't need fixing. Now every time I see this girl, she avoids eye contact completely. I guess it was better for me to just mind my own business that night. So yeah, that's when I realized how not cool being a nosy bartender can be sometimes.
