I Broke My Kid's New Toy on Purpose Because I Was Mad at Him

My name is Sarah, and I have two young boys who are four years apart in age. My eldest son, Jake, just turned seven a few weeks ago, and my youngest son, Liam, will turn three this summer. They both love toys, but lately they've been arguing more about sharing their playthings rather than playing cooperatively like they used to. The other day was particularly stressful for me because I had work deadlines approaching, which meant less time with them during the week. Jake received a new action figure as a birthday gift from his grandmother, and he was super excited about it. He loves collecting figures and displaying them on shelves in his room. Liam, who is only three, got a similar but different action figure set for his own collection. As soon as I put Liam down for his nap, Jake came downstairs to play with the new toy. It's not that he doesn't include Liam; they usually have fun together until it gets too loud or competitive. But this time, when Liam woke up and wanted to join in, Jake wasn't so willing to share. He started telling Liam to stay away because his action figure was too fragile for a baby like him. I tried reasoning with Jake about the importance of sharing but got nowhere. As they were playing downstairs, I heard something crash to the ground. My heart sank as I rushed down to see what had happened. There on the floor lay pieces of Jake's new action figure, snapped and broken beyond repair. It was a moment of horror as I realized that my child's birthday present was destroyed. I immediately assumed Liam did it since he’s still learning about being gentle with toys. But as I picked up the pieces, Jake confessed to having deliberately smashed his own toy out of frustration at Liam. I felt utterly ashamed. Here was my oldest son breaking something on purpose because of sibling rivalry and not wanting to share. It was so out of character for him to be destructive like this; usually he’s very responsible with his things. I scolded Jake harshly, telling him how wrong it is to damage property just because you're mad at someone else. But deep down, I knew there were deeper issues here, like the increased tension and lack of parental attention that comes from working parents trying to balance family life. That moment still replays in my head sometimes, especially when I look at Jake's sad face afterward as we tried to clean up what was left of his toy. It wasn't just about him breaking something; it felt like a breakdown of all the values and patience I try so hard to instill every day. Now whenever I see those shelves now empty where that figure used to be, I can’t help but think about how things could've been handled differently.
