The Day I Broke My Best Friend's Confidence in Me

So last year, my best friend Lily and I were inseparable. We did everything together, from studying for exams to planning our college applications. But one day, a big project came up in English class, and we decided to work on it as partners. Lily is super creative and brilliant at coming up with ideas; she’s like this fountain of creativity that just flows out nonstop. I’m more the type who's good at organizing and putting everything together neatly. So Lily had this wild idea for our project, something completely out there but also really clever. She told me all about it excitedly. But when we went to class to present, my hands were shaking so bad that I made a mess of things. I spilled notes everywhere and somehow managed to drop her big brilliant idea right down the drain. Everyone laughed at us, and even though Lily tried to save face with some of our other good stuff, it still felt like she was embarrassed by me. Afterwards, we didn’t talk much about what happened for a while. She started spending more time with other people from class who seemed better suited for her wild creative side. I kept thinking maybe if I’d just calmed my nerves or something, Lily wouldn’t have needed to look elsewhere for someone who could match her energy and excitement. I feel like this moment was the start of a rift between us. Now she has new friends she spends way more time with than me, but she still calls me once in a while when she needs help organizing things or just venting about life stuff. I guess she knows I’m good at that, but it’s not the same as before. I miss our old dynamic where we could come up with crazy ideas and execute them together without one of us feeling like they let each other down. Sometimes when I see her laughing so easily with those others, I feel sad that maybe she won’t ever get to know how much my heart was in it for us being best friends.
