i got caught playing favorites

so i'm this grad student at a small college and the thing is my advisor is like super cool, but i also have another professor who really seems to dislike me. i mean, he's not outright rude or anything but it feels like every little mistake i make gets blown up into a big deal with him. like, if i'm a minute late to class because of traffic or something that small thing just sticks in his head forever and affects my grade later. so anyway, there was this project we had to do for both classes at the same time but the deadlines were different and it made me so stressed out trying to juggle them. i spent a lot more time on the cool advisor's stuff since their feedback is always encouraging instead of nitpicky like the other guy's. turns out when i turned in my work late because of the timing, this professor got wind that it was for both classes and he had a go at me about favoring one over the other. the thing is, even though it felt like it, i don't think i actually played favorites on purpose. it's just way harder to motivate myself when someone doesn't seem supportive or cares more about tiny things than my overall progress. but then this guy tries acting like there was some huge moral failing here because i prioritized one professor over another based on the environment he creates for me, and now everyone is giving me sideways looks. i kinda feel like a bad student and also an asshole to this other professor who never seems to give me a break anyway. i didn't think it was going to come down to picking sides or that my academic choices would be called into question over just how stressed out i got trying to manage expectations in both directions at once.
