I'm The Boss During Night Shift But Also A Mess

So I’ve been working night shift at this warehouse for about three years now. It’s mostly a quiet job with the occasional emergency shipment, and it keeps me occupied during those weird hours when everyone else is asleep. I manage a small team of five folks who all know each other pretty well because we’re like an exclusive club that only operates between midnight and eight in the morning. Anyway, so this whole thing started about two weeks ago. We had this big shipment that was due at 12:03 AM sharp. It’s a tight window to unload it but doable if everyone pitches in. So there I am, bossing everyone around as usual, making sure the operation runs smoothly. I notice one of my colleagues, Alex, lagging behind. He's usually pretty on point and gets his work done without too much hassle. But that night, he looked like he was about to fall asleep standing up or something. I thought maybe it was just a bad day for him, so I gave him a heads-up about the upcoming shift and told him if he needed help with anything, we could split the workload. But as the clock ticks closer to midnight, Alex is still not pulling his weight like everyone else. There’s no time to waste, especially since there's already some delay in our schedule due to an earlier issue that I had to handle myself instead of delegating it. So here comes my confession: I got a little frustrated and snapped at him during the rush. "Alex! You're holding us back," I said sharply over the noise of the machinery. "If you can't keep up, then get out of our way. We don't need distractions right now." The words left my mouth before I could even process them fully. Everyone froze for a second, and then went back to work faster than ever. After that, Alex just stopped interacting with me at all. He did his job, kept his head down, but there was this awkward tension between us during the rest of the night shift. It's been two weeks since, and while we still talk about work stuff when it’s necessary, the vibe is definitely different now. Looking back, I know that what I said wasn't just a bit harsh, it was unnecessarily cruel and dismissive of his struggles. But at 12:03 AM when you’re in charge of ensuring everything runs on time, sometimes your focus narrows down to the task at hand, and the people who can help get swallowed up by the stress. So here’s my confession, I messed up as a manager that night. I know better than to lose it like that with someone, but I did. And now I’m left wondering how to make amends without making things worse.
