...I Gave Myself an Excuse Pass for Not Doing Homework Grading...

Alright folks, I'm confessing something small but it's been weighing on me like a boulder ever since I did it. Let's set the scene: It’s a Friday afternoon and my fifth-grade class has just finished up their last test of the week. Now comes the dreaded grading session where all you want to do is...anything else. That's exactly what happened, and here’s how it unfolded. I’m sitting at my desk with piles upon piles of student homework assignments staring back at me like a mountain I know won't get any smaller on its own. I should be doing this, there’s no doubt, but there was also the temptation to...just not start. And that's where the genius plan came in. Or so it felt. I grabbed one piece of work and scribbled some random grades, then placed it back into my neat stack. Then I made a quick phone call to pretend like I had something urgent at home I needed to take care of, a broken faucet or a sudden need for groceries (true story). Voila! One hour later I came back looking exhausted but ready to 'take on the task,' as if nothing happened. The guilt didn’t really kick in until Monday, when I realized my mountain had turned into an Everest-sized challenge. But it wasn't just that, the kids were still turning in work during the weekend and expecting feedback by Monday morning. So now there’s a stack and a half of papers to grade, all because I gave myself an excuse pass for not doing something as small but important as homework grading. And here I am...still feeling a bit cheeky about that Friday afternoon escapade, even though I know better than anyone how important it is to keep up with the little things. But hey, everyone deserves a break sometimes, right? Even when you’re not supposed to take one.
